About the Project

Over two years, enJOY arts worked with young women from Wythenshawe and Gorton to uncover and celebrate stories of everyday Manchester women, creating three brand new site-specific performances at small heritage venues across the city.

In the first phase of the project, spring/summer 2017, we teamed up with the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester (Wythenshawe group) and the Greater Manchester Police Museum (Gorton group), creating site-specific performances at both venues. Incorporating music, drama & dance, these performances were inspired by hidden histories of women in the typically male-dominated industries of transport and policing in the early 20th Century.

The second phase of the project in 2018 brought the two groups together to create a larger scale performance at Victoria Baths. This built upon elements of each previous piece and coincided with the centenary of the first women being granted the vote in summer 2018. For this performance, the young women were joined by our adult women’s group, Herizons. Throughout the project, the groups presided over the development of this interactive online resource in collaboration with Digital Women’s Archive North (DWAN).

The project concluded with the launch of this digital archive in January 2019.
